At a juncture to make a decision

feeling like having insufficient information and need to make decision based on the data on hand.. Two of my friends' who have made the leap and one very much like me had the following to say...

find 1 factor which is VERY important to u and if this decision will 100% provide that....something that in future if things go bad and when you r regretting, u shd think of this 1 thing and be able to say to yourself that for this reason I think its worth giving it another try...

Find 1 such factor and u are ok.. At the end of the day, do not bow down for any pressure...think whats good for u ....

Food

I am a foodie.. I love good food. I gave up vegetarianism of 2.5yrs at Hawaii given that its famous for seafood. From the time I decided to give it up, it took me 6 meals before I could taste the first meat. It was "seared acai tuna" with soy and wasabi.. so didnt real feel anything remotely meat. So, after I came to Seattle, I went in search of carribean/hawaiian cuisine and found this place called "Waid's". The day I went, it was closed.. so headed to Kallaloo. Tried some mahi mahi and goat curry along with fried plantains.. it was great. A week later, called up Waid's.. confirmed that it was open and dragged a friend along to this place. To be frank, wursssttt restaurant I've ever been to in my life. Seriously, the fish and lamb meat felt like kept out for few days.. totally dry and oh god.. just cant describe how horrible they were. Never ever go to this place.

I went to Thai Ginger at Pacific place for the first time... tried their prawn yellow curry fried rice and crab fried rice.. both were tasty and well done. Definitely will go there again.

After a long time, I went for brunch with my girl "frand". A new place called "Couzin's cafe" on 85th street in Kirkland. Amazin menu selection. I tried half order of potato pancakes and half order of banana pancakes with bottomless coffee. The food just tasted right and the service was impeccable. The waitress was very attentive and did a great job.. will definitely go there again to try other items in the menu.

My recent discovery :)

Scanning through the aisles of Trader Joe's(love their selection.. always have very interesting stuff to try), I came across "Pomegranate white tea" claiming to be a powerhouse of anti-oxidants. I love pomegranates and love having something warm to drink always.. one of the biggest reasons why I end up drinking hot water, coffee and tea in large quantities. For the past year, I've replaced much of tea/coffee at home with drinking emergen-C in water. I still yearn for warm liquids.. so thought Pom white tea must be interesting.

First few things that I like about it:
(a) nice wine red color,
(b) with a tad bit of sugar, tastes amazingly good like warm juice.

Interesting facts about white tea:
(a) healthiest tea - high detoxification effects,
(b) anti-bacterial with its flouride content - unfortunately not strong enough for u to replace drinking this with your "brushing teeth" activity :) but promises "no teeth stains",
(c) caffiene and does not act as a diuretic,
(d) anti-oxidant powerhouse.

So, convinced that this is going to be a good addiction to have :).

Aging well

One of my goals has always been "aging well".. be like some of my grand parents who had wide perspective, great marital life and social circle.

I was reading a synopsis on "Aging Well", which is a writeup on study made on people who grew to old age, and have identified what it makes "old age" a successful, happy period of your life. Sounds very interesting and definitely worthwhile to read as we continue our journey of life.

The book talks about what it takes to age well. Healthy habits are important and more important is building healthy social support.

(a) The importance of marriage and the impact of divorce
(b) The role of play and creative activity
(c) The benefits of forming new friendships and new social networks
(d) The importance of intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning

"Giving" to people than you might take is essential for a satisfying life.

One of the reviews that caught my attention and resonated a lot with what I've acutely felt and heard often,

There may be a few steps one can take to improve the odds. The main task is to create favorable conditions for those mature coping styles that seem to unlock so many treasures of a rich old age. First, says Vaillant, “Our defenses are always more mature when we are not hungry, angry, lonely, tired, or drunk. Feeling safe, secure, and ‘held’ allows us to use more mature defenses.” Second, although it is not easy to change our defenses by ourselves, chance favors a prepared mind: “We can start by admiring how other skillful people cope. Then ponder, when things go badly for us, how we might have used self-defeating mechanisms.” Lastly, he says, consider this rule of thumb: “Don’t try to think less of yourself, but try to think of yourself less.”

Have I told about Myrtle Potter ...

You are going to here more of these for next few months until I've it in the top of my subconscious mind... things that I had forgotten temporarily while agonizing myself. My hope is also you will gain something out of this journey of mine.

Myrtle was the woman who inspired me 3 years ago for the lateral move in career. Few things I learnt from her talk back then.. which required some recollection oflate was

(1) Whatever you do, ensure you make a difference..in small seemingly trivial things. You do better than anybody you know could do.. try to 1-up the deliverable over others. My best friend, philosopher and guide told me this yesterday.. and this brought back to my mind what Myrtle said 3 years ago. Small things add up and will make the difference in the long run.

(2)Be a better person.. that should be your mantra... thats your commitment to yourself.

When you start thinking you are getting the short end of the deal, you will stop giving and will give the same "short end of the deal" experience to people. Do unto others what u want them to do unto you :). Relish the joy of giving :). Always take the high road :).

My mom told me.. there are no shortcuts in life and you are not expected to deliver the end result in a day.. but it will take couple of decades..and the result at the end of it is what matters.. but dont forget to enjoy the journey to it. Think positive .. think positive.
