Musings on Why we exist, what's the purpose of life

I use to ask myself these question at times and get depressed.  Today, these questions again surfaced after several years.  Why do we make money, why do we need to work, why do people go through these milestones of study, get a job, get married, have kids and fill their life with these events, and die one day.  How do I quantify my life, did I do the right things,  did I make the wrong decisions,  why did I not get married right out of college or remain in the job I took up, why did I not do either and go for higher studies, why did I get confused with similar questions and not the same passion I started with during my grad school days, delaying my graduation.  Someone I met today told me, get rid of any thoughts that hash your past, it just gets one depressed. Think of what you want to do, spend energy and time focusing on how to get what you want. Thinking more, I realized no one knows whether they are doing the right things in their life. You have to start somewhere, better to have a plan and make effort towards it.  Things I want to do is,  find a partner with whom I would enjoy doing things  like outdoor activities, long conversations and just generally be happy, make babies with.  I want to travel and live in other continents like Europe, India, Australia, South America and/or Africa, preferably before my babies go to high school giving them the exposure to all these cultures, people and places. That seems like a rich life to live and exactly what I want to do. Another thing this wise person told me is, when you feel depressed, reach out to people and see how you can enrich their life.  I tried that once or twice for a prolonged period but realized it is not that easy to enrich other's life if they are not a strong accomplice. So, dont waste time too much on that but rather make a list of things you want to do, and do it.
