Recent narration of an incident by a friend how a lady called her kid ugly when there was nothing ugly about the kid.. when I asked her why that lady said that.. she mentioned that woman is considered a beauty because she's light skinned. ..you know how indians considered any light skinned person as beautiful. Now that I am far removed from most of that drama, I am amused when somebody comments on my skin color during my India visits. With lot of sadness in their voice, they quib how dark I've become and remisce that I was once fair as a kid. I am personally not bothered.. thanks to the exposure to american society where beauty is all about perception.. its all about your attitude, how you carry yourself.. Come to think of it.. people look more beautiful when they smile and americans smile a lot. Dont know when the obsession with fair skin will die.. Though I believe this way I will not deny I was taken by surprise when I saw the handsomest guy in our high school married to a dark damsel. I am actually happy that somebody living in India has gone ahead with his gut feel and ignored social norms of beauty.
