Predominant fear of marriage for singles I know of are because of :
(1)Fear of divorce.
(2)Too little planning for a life together
(3)Feeling out of control and overwhelmed.
(4)Undiscussed issues such as attitudes about money, dealing with problems, and an inability to argue fairly rise to the surface
(5)Repressed feelings and issues.

I've my own sister as an example for a smart woman having a great married life and a career on fast track mode.
This is what I've seen in reality. A confident smart man will go for a woman with similar traits. Success begets success :). In the words of an american guy friend, Controlling behaviour kicks in when there is insecurity or lack of confidence in winning a fair argument when it arises. A smart woman/man will know not to sabotage the boat she/he's in and will do enough to maintain a smooth sail :).
